Biography

Reverend Adefris "Eddie" Habte Mekasha (born August 1959) is a prominent Ethiopian author, translator, and minister. He is most celebrated for his foundational contributions to modern Ethiopian children's literature, most notably his beloved Amharic adaptation of Kurategnaw Demet (ኩራተኛው ድመት / "The Proud Cat")

Early Life and EducationBorn in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Adefris grew up during a tumultuous era of political upheaval. As a high school student, he was imprisoned for three years under the oppressive Marxist Derg regime. Undeterred, he completed his high school education while in prison. He later attended Addis Ababa Commercial College and the Mekane Yesus Seminary.

Literary Contributions & Translation WorkAdefris became a household name for generations of Ethiopian children through his work as a translator and writer.Kurategnaw Demet (ኩራተኛው ድመት): He translated and masterfully localized this famous children's story (originally by Ruz Hérman). The book features a proud cat who challenges elements like fire and water, eventually learning humility. It became a staple of Ethiopian childhood, seeing more than 10 major republications over 25 years.Afersata (አፈርሳታ): Beyond children's books, he translated culturally significant literature and social commentaries for adult audiences.Christian Literature: In 1991, he helped organize the very first Christian bookstore through the Mekane Yesus Lutheran Church in Ethiopia.

Move to the United States and MinistryIn 2002, Adefris immigrated to the United States, later adopting the name Eddie Mekasha. He continued his love for language, theology, and community service by earning a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.

In the U.S., he served as the editor for the Amharic edition of the international publication Herald of His Coming (Amharic Herald), translating and distributing religious materials to the Ethiopian diaspora. He has since built a long career as an ordained Lutheran pastor, immigrant outreach director, and corporate chaplain.
